EPF Passbook Login - Procedure and Common Problems

EPF is one of the largest social security scheme provided by government of India. It is managed by a government organization called Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). All EPF members and their employers need to access various services of EPFO like EPF Balance Check, Passbook Download, etc.

As of Feb 2018, EPFO has provided lot of online services for members to manage their EPF accounts and check EPF passbook. But many times epf members struggle to get simple service login to check their epf passbook. There a dedicated epf member portal to check details of your epf account, kyc status etc, but somehow epf passbook functionality has been removed from that site and kept on a new portal called member passbook portal. Currently as of Feb 2018, EPF passbook is available from a specific passbook portal (called member passbook portal) available at https://passbook.epfindia.gov.in/MemberPassBook/Login.jsp

How to login to epf passbook portal - what's your username and what's your password? Here are the quick details:

1. User Name -- Your UAN (epf unified account number) is your username for getting access to EPF passbook site. If you don't know your UAN, then please enquire from your employer. Typically your EPF UAN number is part of your monhtly payslip

2. Password -- That's where most of users face problem. They don't know what's the password for login to the epf passbook site and there is no clearity on the website. If you are trying to login to epf website for the first time, please follow our guide on UAN activation where we explain in detail how to activate your account and set the password.

Once you set the password by following the UAN activation guide, wait for 6 hours and then come back to epf passbook website, enter your UAN and the password for login and you should be able to login successfully on epf passbook website.

EPF Passbook Login - password forgot

If your password is not working, you will have to go to main epf portal. On that portal, there is a link for 'forgot password', which you can use to change your password.

Please note that many times users have never activated their UAN account for online login. In such case, forgot password does not work. To make it work, please follow our UAN activation guide and activate your account first.

EPF Passbook login not working

If you have activated your epf UAN account and have tried to reset your password using forgot password option and still your epf passbook login is not working, then what to do?

Typical error seen in such case is 'Invalid UAN or password'. Here are the options if your login is still not working:

1. EPFO toll free contact number is 1800118005 and it is available from 09:15 AM to 05:45 PM on all seven days a week.

2. Raise a request at UAN helpdesk or so call epf grievance management system. It is available at http://epfigms.gov.in/

EPF Passbook login - passbook not available

A common problem observed after successful login to EPF passbook site is an error message shown in the screen - 'Passbook not available', when you click on 'select MEMBER ID to view passbook'.

As of this moment, there is no clear solution to this. This is a common problem for new epf subscribers and many times it takes at least 3-4 months to get your passbook updated at the passbook portal.

EPF Passbook login - Error! UAN password not available

If you see this error, then you need to activate your UAN account and set the password. Please follow the steps given in the UAN activation guide and activate your account to get rid of 'Error! UAN password not available'.

If you are able to login to members portal and still see this error, then wait for sometime (6 hrs) and try again. Typically there is a delay of around 6 hrs between your password getting updated on members portal and passbook portal.
